Default removing factory orange peel in paint

just curious, after having a car repainted and watching them use Scotch Brite on the brand new paint job to give a glass finish I am wondering if anyone has wet sanded or used the Scotch Brite method on a factory vehicle to remove the orange peel that seems to be in EVERY factory paint job I have seen. Of course when this was done on my car the paint was still not fully cured so I don't even know if you can do that on cured paint.

Would love to be able to have that custom paint job finish on my truck.

researched this last night, no one here as nutted up and done this yet?! Going to pick up a junkyard hood or fender with good paint and try my hand at it before I take a sanding block to my truck. The guys at autogeek have a great tutorial on doing this to factory paint!

Never heard of leveling orange peel with a scotch brite pad. Not a very effective way. Wet sanding? Sure. Everyone does that. I even did I thread on it when I did the nose of my truck. I let the thread die when everyone was worried I might burn through, instead of the fact that I leveled the orange peel.

ill have to talk to my painting buddy to see what he was doing. This was over 10 yrs ago so my memory is foggy but sure do remember him washing my car with Scotch Brite powder or whatever it is and afterwards it looked horrible, like it was sanded. Then he polished and it was like

will have to check out your thread...did you practice on anything or just give it a go? Was this your first time?

Your buddy was probably working on a single stage paint job.

I remember doing that back before clay was popular. It has the same effect. It's a lot more work than clay though.

Not my first time by a long shot. If I had to guess, probably like the 5-600th time I've done it, haha! Been painting in the auto body industry for 16 years. I have a few painting threads in this section, one on how to paint chrome, and another on the Ruby Red refinish process.

Whenever you sand, buff, or polish clear you remove a small amount.

As MB said, you can "level" it out as long as it is not too severe.

Now a question for you, MB. Is most orange peel in the color or the clear? I could see if it's severe enough in the color you may not be able to compensate for it with the leveled out clear.
