Yeah that is why I do it. I just was recertified in PPG a few weeks ago. They had info on the "science of rock chips." It was interesting. They found it's mostly the sealer. If the sealer is flexed, it will be more chip resistant. Clear coat is really flexible actually. Even without flex additive. When I let it harden in a cup at work, I'll pull it out in a big chunk, and whip it across the shop. That thing will bounce like a rubber ball!!


Yeah dude, customers are funny. "Now this won't chip right? " I'll tell you what you don't say... "no more than the rest of the front end of any other vehicle. " Because then they will proceed to tell you how their vehicle doesn't have any chips. Then you point out like 90 of them in 10 seconds... They get pissed... So don't do that, haha!

yeah some people don't have the eye for that sort of thing. And some people don't realize that any broad surface is going to chip when u throw debris on it on the highway haha I've always thought the clear was flexible enough because I peel the dried clear out of my mixing cups to reuse it and it feels plenty flexible

Looking to paint my XLT grille and have gained a good sense of what to do, my question is i regards to the insert. Mine is gray and I really would like it black. Any advice on what steps to take and what products one should use to accomplish this. Thanks in advance!

Bare grey plastic? If so, misty people in here do the krylon fusion stuff. I'm not a fan, but many have good luck from what I read on here

I now exclusively use bulldog adhesion promoter. And I highly recommend this product.




Also, I'm back at a shop that uses PPG. They have released a new epoxy primer, that is leaps and bounds above the one I used when I started this thread. It is called DPLV. No pic of it yet, will get one on Monday. This epoxy primer is designed to be used as sealer. You can seal right over it, but there's no need. So basically the process goes like this...

Prep/sand/clean
Adhesion promoter
Epoxy primer
Straight to color
Clear.


So it removed a whole step which is nice
