Default 2011 XLT with rocker panel rust & photos

Live in the Kansas City, MO metro area. So salt on roads every winter. I bought the truck new in May, 2011 and it has 70,000 miles.

Ford dealer I bought it from said $5,000 to replace/repair rocker panels on both sides.

Rhino liner company said coating the rocker panels in these locations both top and bottom might slow the rust down.

Any thoughts on other options, pricing?

Top inside of rocker panel -

Looks like its still solid. Can't see replacing anything yet. What I normally do there is, sand blast the rust. Then use por 15 in the areas you don't see. The areas you do, I etch prime, urethane prime, then epoxy sealed, and re painted

Let me know what route you end up going with this please. I also have the same rust starting. Only surface rust with the paint starting to lift in small area. I just bought the truck. I want to try to prevent it from spreading up the rocker. Thanks

Thanks for the responses and suggestion.

I'm taking the truck to a local body shop for a second estimate.

The Ford dealership I bought it from had a material and labor price of $5,700 to replace both rocker panels.

As winter is over for MO/KS, my goal is to get it taken care of during the summer.

Look here:

Then check that area on yours and tell me what you find.
Also look under that tape and see if there is rust.

I decided to treat the rust with POR 15 for now.

It took three different days to clean, prep and apply the POR 15 to the surface rust. About 6 hours total.

Lessons learned -

1. Wear a mask that is rated for paint and use in a well ventilated area. That stuff is STRONG.

2. VERY messy stuff. Be careful not to get it on anything except where you want it.

3. Read the directions carefully and the process should go well. By the third day, I had a pretty good system of clean/prep/apply down.

Por 15 use to come with a warning to not get it on your skin. "The only thing that will remove por 15 is time. "

I use it weekly, and consistently have it on my hands for weeks.
