weird clicking noise
ok so im lookin at a 1998 with a 4.6L, there is a clicking noise that im told is a small exhaust leak. sounds like its coming from the engine, or at the least under the hood. the thing is, is that iv heard this same clicking sound on other late model f150s, expeditions, what have you. so my question is does anybody know if it is an exhaust leak, and if not what is it, and why does it seem like its a common problem with late model ford trucks...any help would be great...thanks

Mr. J. Bauer
When do you hear the noise. If it's when it first starts up when it's cold that's common. Its just lifters, they don't have any oil to really speak of around them because all the oil is drained back into the pan. Other then that I have never heard of and clicking noises.

A small exhaust leak will make a 'ticking' noise that tends to subside as the motor warms up and things expand.
Generally not a problem as far as operation, more of a nuisance thing for the owner and for potential resale value - most buyers shy away from any imperfections unless there is a price break.
IMO, lifter noises tend to subside pretty quick (couple of seconds), exhaust leaks subside gradually until the engine is at operating temp.
