Default Valve seal repair

Hey Guys,

I just finished repairing my intermittent odometer signal so I'm feeling pretty smug about my mechanical abilities and feel maybe I can take on more ambitious tasks.

My question. After reading all that I could find about the white smoke that blows out my tailpipe when I first start my '99 4.6, I"m convinced that the valve seals need to be replaced.

Is this a big job? I am fairly mechanically inclined and I have most of the basic wrenches. Does this job require special tools? Does anyone know of where I might find free instructions for the process.

Lastly, have any of you had this done? Expensive?

Thanks in advance

Not sure about the specifics of a 4.6L - but the valve stem seals is not overly difficult, just time consuming.

Be doggone sure not to let the valve drop into the cylinder - or else it will become a difficult job.

I suggest to get a repair manual - Chiltons, Haynes, etc. - that has the step-by-step details.

Just be sure before you start that you are going after the right problem.

Thanks WDE, I'm going to check with the library to see if they have a repair manual. I too am hoping that this is the problem!
