ticking noise,loss power and strong odor from exahust.plz help...

Default ticking noise,loss power and strong odor from exahust.plz help...

99 f150 4.6 triton v8.when first started theres a ticking noise then as warms up the noise quits.also at that time theres a strong odor from exahust.im thinking it the cataletic converter,any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.thank you...

I'd do two things: 1) pull the truck in a garage wheer there's zero light and look for a spark under the hood ... could be a spark plug wire arc'ing; 2) get a bottle which sprays a mist and spray at each location where the exhaust connects, including the converter. You could have a catalytic converter that;s blown the ceramics completely out which would account for the smell and you could have a bad plug wire or coil pack wire casuing the ticking noise and the loss of power.

thank you for the reply it turned out to be the cataletic converters where bad,luckily it was the back two which i cut them out but left the o2 sensors and boy what a difference on the power and sound......also did the gotts and silencer mods can tell quite a bit of difference on throttle response....thank s again..

How did you determine that it was the rear cats? Also do you get a check engine light with your set up?

i was able to determine it was the back two by laying under the truck with a rubber mallet and tapping on them and listening for the rattles.there is no check engine lights on with the set up because the back o2 sensors where left in ....
