Cannot get new trans filter to fully seat, it falls out in 5 minutes.
This is my first time working on a 4R70W, and was surprised to see that the filter just hangs off the inlet gasket. I was expecting to see something more substantial like in the AOD s where they actually use bolts.
Anyways, the real problem is that I can't get the new filter to seat up in there properly. It goes in maybe a 1/4 inch into the inlet and for the life of me I cannot seem to push it on further.
I looked for obstructions, no old seal or other debris, checked part numbers on new filter and it matches, used a caliper to compare the neck and seal on the old filter to the new one, both are the same. The old filter was tough to wiggle off but the amount of force I'm putting on this new filter and it's not sliding in is ridiculous.
I really hope someone has some ideas. Other than coating the seal in a super slick lith. lube and driving it in with a seal driver and then inserting the filter into the seal, I don't have a clue what else to try. Given the work involved in a trans rebuild, I really don't want to touch any sort of inlet seal with a driver.

Check again for the seal from the old filter. I replaced my filter recently and put everything back together but failed to remove the old seal. When I installed the new filter I thought to myself that it wasn't going in very far. Only when I looked online to find out what the yellow plug was for did I see to make sure that the old seal comes out....checked the old filter in the trashcan and it wasn't on the neck. 
Had to drop the pan again to pry out the old seal. Then the new filter would seat better. As soon as I put the new filter in, I closed up the pan to hold the filter.

Thanks guys, the old seal definitely came out. Turns out the problem was that the aftermarket filter was slightly off spec. I bought a Motorcraft one and it installed easily like it should.
