Default Sometimes won't engage R from D

Hi I'm new to the forum. I have a 2004 FX4 that I've just bought, but don't have a clue about these vehicles or AT for that matter.

I've noticed that when I shift from D to R sometimes R won't engage and I just sit there revving. I have to place it into P then back into R to engage. Is this normal, am I trying to shift too quickly? Should I have to move it to P first?

I've just bought the vehicle and haven't done any oil or fluid changes on it yet.

Thanks for your help, and hello!

Iam no master mind at all this but a transmission flush an new filter may fix the problem.

Yeah, it's my next task. I'm going to change all the oils and see how she is then.

Just thought it may have been a 'quirk'

Thanks.

could also be that its not adjusted right, meaning the shifting cable. if u are having no problems once u go from P to R then i would look at that first.
