Need an Objective:
I guess it all depends on what you want to do with the truck. If you're looking for a little more performance, then the 5.4L should turn the trick; otherwise, I'd stick with the 4.6L. I seen enough horror stories about the 5.4L to make me wary of it, but that's not to say it's a bad engine. I like the 4.6L mainly because it's reliable and long-lived with many of them running 400K+ miles without major problems. Add to that the relatively good efficiency of the 4.6L and the fact that almost all the police cars in the country run them and the choice gets easier to make. ....but then I'm a conservative 75-year-old who has grown up and away from the need for speed.

Depends on your goals. If it is a work truck that doesn't do alot of towing or heavy load hauling, I'd say stick with a 4.6. If you are shooting for more performance, go with the 5.4.

I was lucky. A friend who did Lightning swaps sold me a NA 5.4 for $800.00 and I sold the 4.6 for $600.00. I needed an 8 bolt flywheel for $75.00 and the rest was a few feet of wiring and maybe $50.00 in fluids.

I forgot to answer the first question. If you can pull an engine you can do the swap. Again I was lucky because the 2000 4.6 uses the same COP ignition as the 5.4. A manual tranny helps too as there are no converter bolts to undo.
