Eh, have to remember the 80s were tough times for performance - things were getting severely gagged back in performance so to meet emissions requirements.
If I heard correctly, Ford was having so much trouble getting the 302 to meet emissions standards, that they were giving away a few 351s to get the fleet averages up. Whether this is true or not - don't know, but it is at least believable to me.
At any rate, only have the Chilton's book for my generation - 87-91 model years. The '87 was rated for 170hp, with the '88-'91 rated for 185hp. Just for comparisons and giggles - the '81 Jeep carbureted 304 was rated for only 125hp.
I had the opportunity a few years ago to drive a stock '95 F150 with a 5.0L - just amazed by the differences in performance between it and mine.
