A real cheap, as in free, way of doing this is to get defunct computer hard drives. They have a pair a very powerful magnets in them they work extremely well for this purpose.

Have not tried the HDD magnets, but certainly worth a shot. Don't know if they are rated for high temperatures or not.
For those trying the K&J N42SH magnets, the ones I listed will spread equally around the filter if placed side by side. 10 fit nicely. Of course you can also run them stuck together side by side, but that can get expensive if you try to go the whole way around.
I bought 25 to get the price break. 10 magnets on oil filters for two cars and the rest get stuck on differential covers and oil/tranny pans.

HHD magnets are made out of the same material as the ones you purchased. They are so powerful that if you put them on a ferrous metal surface you have to slide them off the edge to get them off.
