Noise in front diff- Thoughts?
Hi, I have a 1999 Expedition, 145K. The truck is the version that doesn't have 2wd so it always is in awd. Well in the last few months I have been getting a noise, somewhat of a rubbing or grinding noise when I am pulling away from a stop and the front wheels are turned.
It is coming from up front, under the truck, not either wheel. If I pull away from a stop and am going straight I don't get the noise as well as lets say I am slowing down and turning into a parking spot and the drivetrain isn't under load I don't get the noise. So I am thinking it is the front diff and am hearing the noise when I am turning because each wheel is turning at a different speed. Other than this the truck drives with no noise fine.
I was thinking of doing the "Brown Wire Mod" and see if removing the load from the front drivetrain on take off will eliminate the noise.-
Any thoughts on what is going on??

Open up the diff and look for abnormal wear.
Check wheen bearings for play.
Deos it feel like it jerks if you make a sharp turn slowly on pavement?
