ok just bought a 91 with 5.0 body good with a slight knock in motor for dirt cheap.not bad untill a couple weeks later the knock gets much worse.this is my first 302 and I need some good feedback. so I go thru the routine,1st off take serpentine belt off to eliminate any noise from the belt driven stuff.listened with my handy hose and I have a slight lifter noise-thats a given- but noise is defenitely comming from crank put my ear extention right behind harmonic balancer to front seal and it sounds very loud... ran hose back along oil pan and did not hear much. also that test was performed with engine cold.I've noticed that once engine warms up it tends to go away most of the time.also when i'm idling in gear very noticable but goes away when I put it in park...... any feedback would be great!! I'm ready to yank it and rebuild it but would like some opinions first. also this is my first day joining.hope to get to know some of you

The rule of thumb on such engine noises is a heavy knock, knock, knock is a bad bottom end, usually the big end of a connecting rod, rarely a main bearing. A sharp fast purring tapping noise is a wrist pin, this can also be a bad lifter, which is more of a clicking sound. to tell which, get a engine stethoscope or a wooden dowel and listen to where the noise is coming from.
I don't know what you want to do, You could rebuild what you have and save some money. American push rod engines are real easy to rebuild. get a rebuild kit and have the necessary machine work done and assemble the beastie, or have the machine shop do it for you. With the gigantic number of used 302's, and 351W's out there a used engine is definitely something to consider, or you could just get a long block and be done with it.

I had a similar loud knock a couple years ago in my ' 93 F150 with a 302 that had me worried.On closer inspection I saw that the bolts holding the harmonic balancer were loose and a couple of them were almost falling out.Just thought of that cuz you said it was loudest in that location.
