I have an 2004 F150 Lariat with an 5.4 and it does the same thing where it sounds like an small diesel. I took into the dealer today and it turned out to be the cam phasers. If you open the hood and listen under the hood and if it sound likes it coming from the valve covers it possibaly it could be a phasers. But take her and have the dealership have a look.

yea sounds like u guys found out the problem narrowing it dont to the cam phasers, in all the 5.4 3v its what mainly goes. the cam phasers advance and retard the engine. so when the cam phasers go bad u may notice the ur truck is running more rough. its some design that ford did because if u look the 5.4 3v dont have an egr valve. also if ur truck is running smooth at a stop light and for a second it seems to run rough thats normal, its called a lean roll, thats apart of the cam phasers advancing and retarding the engine, and if anyone needs their spark plugs changed that live in florida. and near west plam beach ill do it.

It will only hurt your pocket , when I took my truck in for the repair , after discussing it with ford , it they ONLY charged me $ 500.00 , they said after their discount . It could have been over $ 1000.00. what irritated me was that my truck had 28000 mi. but 39 mos after purchase

If the cam phasers fail will it set a code? I just bought a 05 with 74k miles on it and want to make sure I did not get a lemon.
