I know my 91 did it once when it was super cold outside the pump stopped working briefly, but it straightened up. As well as my 95 the pump went out, and it sounded just like a diesel.

I know what you are talking about. I can ask one of the Techs that we got from Ford what it is. I know it is a easy fix.

Is it a quite "tick tick tick tick"

Or a loud "Knock clank clund tick knock"

A tick tick tick tick, is a typical 5.4, the injectors are noisy but they aren't bad. I've been able to hear my injectors since the day I pulled it off the lot, and every 3V 5.4 F-150 I've heard sounds the same. If you have to shut the doors, roll up the windows and turn off the fan and radio to hear it you are probably just hearing the injectors. If you can hear it with the radio on and the windows down, I'd get that checked out.

the ticking sound that makes it sound like a diesel is from your cam phasers. my 04 5.4 does the same thing and i had a tech listen to it and he said alot of 5.4 have that sound....he said it wont hurt the truck.
