Money -- Cost for Tune-up for 2006 XLT 5.4 Triton
108,000 miles; dealer wants $900 for a tune-up. I'm in shock.
The dealer keeps telling me that the factory sparks used in 2006 had tips that would break and fall off into the cylinder, resulting in costly repairs. I asked him why there wasn't a recall on that, and he told me that it wasn't a "recall item".
The dealer tells me that they have to have "special" tools to remove those plugs and "special" tools to retrieve pieces that fall into the cylinder.
The only special tool I have for removing spark plugs is a spark plug socket, which cost less than $10.00.
Assuming it takes 1 hour to replace plugs and wires, at a labor rate of $85.00, just how much do those new plugs cost at retail and how much does that special tool set cost to remove the plugs?
I know that I can find zillions of shade-tree mechanics in Houston who will say they can do it for $100, but is the dealer right? Are special tools required and is there a significant risk of a piecce falling into the cylinder?

either get the lisle tool and do it, or shop around. the dealer close to my house, in florida, wanted $300 for the job no matter how many broke. still i prefered to do by myself, and that was $1oo in spark plugs or so. plus the lisle tool that i reselled after that.

Well, I'm in the Ford house for a maintenance service and asked about whether the charge for a tune-up would be less than $900 if none of the spark plgs broke. "No, because we do other services in that like a carbon removal, etc."
Yeah, right. Time to use a different mechanic.

It's funny how Ford claims it as a non-recall item but the dealerships are aware of the issue and basically taken advantage of it by charging us a harm and leg to remove them and if they break one, they charge more even though it's their certified mechanics with proper tools and training that basically are breaking them since some of you were able to remove them with no issue. Where are the lawyers, we should be suing Ford and their dealerships for taken advantage of us, they know of the issue but won't do nothing about it. Basically if the dealership break a spark plug then they should be charging Ford for the labor/tool cost and not us. Talk about BS

Where in Florida are you? Im in South Florida and Sawgrass Ford quoted me $300 - $500 depending on how many plugs break. They said the plugs alone are $120.00

I had all 8 plugs replaced and number three coil and some hoses for 1k at the Ford Dealer. Ofcourse though when I first took her in they did there "complementary inspection" and with everything they wanted to do it was going to cost me $1800. Told them I would have to come in another day to get all my fluids flushed.
