A tranny with overdrive if you don't have one. Take off slowly from a dead stop. Keep it tuned up (plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, etc). Make sure your fuel filter is clean. Keep a clean air filter in it. Make sure you have the right level of trans fluid. Use the family car for running around town. Don't count the mileage while towing because everyone's sucks at that, even my dad's 4 cyl Toyota.
Beyond that, the 4.9l is not known for good mileage. It's big enough, then you add 4wd & you can't expect much more from it. Sorry. But it's a very good motor & will run forever if you just change the oil.

I don't know, I have had my 89 for only a couple months. It was a disaster when I got it. Needed a tune up desperatly. Etc. so so far I am doing 17 in mixed driving with a light right foot. For a full size, no overdrive pick-up, I would call that good.
My son has an 88 no overdrive. Highway is a consistant 18 and 15 around town. No it won't do that at 80 mph!

I hear people making claims of getting 18-20MPG in pickups & find it hard to believe. Not calling you a liar, but it hasn't been my experience, esp. without overdrive. I had the 4.2L 5 spd manual in my '99 & barely knocked down 18MPG driving 84 miles round-trip all highway. Throw in 4WD & forget about it. One of the guys at work has an S10 4WD & claims only 14-15 MPG.

Its true that some trucks can get descent gas mileage. My 5.8 used to get 17-18 MPG(HWY) when it had 31's on it but Im not sure what its getting now since I put 35's on(I know its not any where near as good).

A lot of it has to do with driving style. My wife gets 11 out of her Grand Cherokee. When I drive it, I see low to mid 14's. I don't drive the speed of light, and i plan my stops. So I don't wait until the last minute to stop. When I see that a light will change in the next block, I'm off the gas, free mpg. I saw an article several years ago in Money Mag about how much fuel is wasted by poor driving habbits. I see it all the time. I have given tips to freinds that are willing to listen. when gas hit $4, I had people asking for tips. I was able to significantly improve most peoples gas mileage. Now if my wife would only listen. She also burns through brakes and tires at an alarming rate
