I Want The Best Out Of My 2001 5.4l. Any Advice?
I HAVE A 2001 F-150 off road WITH THE 5.4L TRITON V8. the truck has 107,xxx miles and runs really good. i'm getting around 14-16 mpg. this weekend i jsut put in a k&n air filter. and i'm thinking in a few weeks i'm going to put in a new battery, though still not sure what to go with cold cranks? do you guys use the oil reccomended on the oil cap, or do you use something different. i live in south west pa. so it does get cold. i dont really haul anythign but a 4 wheeler in the bed. do alot of hunting so i'm offroad a bit in the fall and i tend gas wells onthe side. i do believe last time i put in 10 w 30 pennzoild syn. blend high milage. with stp oil treatment. but looking at the truck oil cap the other day i'm almost possitive it said 5w30. i used the 10w 30 cause my bro in law uses it in his 03' f-250 5.4l. now i dont know what to do. but withthe engine getting up there i want to do whatever i can for it, to make it last and to get the most out of it.

I have a 1997 f150 ext cab 4x4 with a 5.4 with about 125,000 miles most of those are hard miles in the 80mph+ fast take offs so n so. Yes the cap will say 5w-30 and I run gtx high milage with lucas heavy duty oil stabilazier also run lucas fuel system adds every oil change as well I highly recomend Lucas oil adds. I have friends that have high milage trucks and they run cheap 10w-30 even 10w-40 in them because its cheaper then syn high milage oil. You being in colder weather i would stick to the 5w-30 for sure its never giving me any problems. Also the K&N gold oil fiter isnt to bad to pay the extra money for when i switched from a mobil1 to the K&N the oil stayed more rich i noticed when i was changeing the oil. Also i belive one of the major things to keep an engine running log always change the oil every 3,000 or 3 months for me i never hit the 3months.

easy mods
if youd like to see 20mpg, and still be able to roast the tires, get the edge evolution programmer, a cat back dual exhaust, and a good intake setup. i have all 3, and a few other mods, and man does my truck get up and go!

I'm with LIT3 - Tuner, exhaust and intake will help wake up that 5.4!

Ok, this sounds good, what is your intake setup and other mods? I hav got the cat back, K&N intake and the superchips but not seeing 20 mpg. I have a new post listed for a new intake manifold - any mods there?

The only way you might even come close to 20mpg in a 5.4 is to get a custom tune written for you truck based on fuel milage only and adjusting you driving habits too. I get 16mpg on my rig after installing a canned Superchips programmer running premium fuel.
