how much oil
my 1998 f-150 with the 4.6l i recently did an oil change and put 6 quarts like the book says back in but im barley on the stick so i put and extra quart and a half in to top it off to the max mark ive got the tow package with the oil cooler could this be the reason cause nothing in my books says anything about it i have always said the oil is good when its full but my research said full is bad on thes modular engines cause it could blow out seals so i guess i just need to know if i should drain some out of it or leave it be thanks

Definately get the oil level to in-between the low and full line on the dip stick. 6 quarts is just a approximation from them, they probably didnt take that oil cooler into cnsideration, which will probably take a quart itself. When you change your oil, put in the reccomended amount then start the truck and let it run for 5-10 seconds, then check the level. Sometimes the oil will pool up in the head and thats what makes it seem like it is low on oil. If it is still low add some more, if its not then its good.

More Oil Level
Last week I came home with my new 2008 4.6L super crew with 22 miles. As I always do with a new vehicle, I immediately drained the oil and switched to Mobil 1 5W-20 (which, by the way was hard to find in the stores - I went to three before anyone had it). Anyway, as another person said, the book says it takes 6 qts but 6 qts in mine brought the level to half way between the lower stick dot and the upper stick dot. So after a week (just to be sure it was still that way) I added 1/2 qt. And mine doesn't have the optional oil cooler, just whatever is normal. Seems like the book is wrong. I hope I haven't done the wrong thing?

I feel better about what I've read on this thread because I had the same curiosities about my 2002 4.6. I've only had it a year and am on the third oil change. 6 quarts gets it about 2/3 up the crosshatch. I do have a towing package, but I thought the oil cooler was for the transmission fluid.?

The cooler is for the transmission . Many vehicles have a transmission fluid cooler standard. I think that is the tiny radiator in front of the normal engine cooling radiator, down at the bottom. When a trailer tow package is added, sometimes the transmission cooler is enlarged in to something of greater volumn, and then; an engine oil cooler radiator is also added. My Chevy van was that way. But I don't know about my F150 truck, since it doesn't have the trailer tow package. It just seems wrong for my owners manual to plainly state the engine takes 6 qts when it takes 6-1/2 (or something close), and several owner agree.
