High mileage 2v 5.4
Hey gents,
I'm looking at a expedition this weekend with the 2v in it. It is an 03 with about 180k. I'll be trading a car for it that's worth about 2k. When i inspect the truck I'll be using a borescope to look in the valve train for sludge and tarnish. Ill make sure to see if I can here if the phasers are going or the chain guides. Check the oil for water in it. What else should I be looking for. I know these engines can last 300k but I don't know the history of this one. Also how does one tell if the engine is original?

I see a F150 with the 5.4 2V 630,000 miles on it.
The truck was retired for other reasons. The owner said the engine was never touched out side of general maintenance. The engine was still strong.

Ask when the coil packs were replaced. Starts chewing them up around 165. I'm on my third coil pack at 180k. Easy fix just a pain if you don't have any when one starts to fail.

450 HP to the rear wheels is where the crappy pistons and rods max out. Try to go much above that and you'll be looking at replacing the block when a rod is thrown...

I had a 99 f150 with the 5.4. Two major issues with mine. One, blew out a plug at about 125k miles. Two, head gasket leam on tne passenger side. Never had any antifreeze in oil or vice versa, just leaked it out the back and all over tne starter and exhaust, smoking like a chimney.
So check for signs of oil soak or extensive engine cleaning.

2v dont have phasers. Look at the starter like said above for the head gasket oil leak otherwise 180k is NOT high miles for that engine. They will last 500k easy if taken care of.. The rest of the vehicle falls apart before the motor.

I replaced mine with MSD blaster packs from Summit auto racing and they have made it over 150K so far.
