No the trannys will not cross. The one off your 351M/400 will work on the 429/460. A 351W will cross with a 289/302.

In a truck this engine would get just about the same mileage, as long as you are not too hard on the gas pedal.
The 460 is one of the biggest gas hog engines ever made! Most anyone only gets 10 mpg in a truck if you're with this engine. I think the aerodynamics make alot more different between these two vehicles.

Yup, I am not going for mpg in my bronco. Just as about the same mpg and alot more power on call. Depends on what you want. I want the power to turn big tires fast. You want mpg you need to get a nice 351w.

I would imagine it is the way the two vehicles are geared the Mark IV is geared rather tall for low rpm cruising to keep things quiet, where as the truck is geared for pulling, if it is a 4X4 there is all of that extra weight associated with the front driven axle. Of course a truck is like driving a brick down the road. I don't think there is anyway of getting such mileage out of a 460 today with all of this fuel polluted with corn squeez'ens I have owned Ford vehicles with the 289, 292, 302, 312, 351W, 360, 390, V8's and the 200, and 300 inline 6's. Of the V8 the only real turkey is the 360 which had a crap set of heads. Of the V8's I have to say my two favorites are the 302, and 351W. The 200, and 240/300 in line 6's are the best such engines in their classes. I could easily get 27 miles per gallon with the 200 cid I-6 in a 64 Ford Falcon.

What ever you decide for your engine keep in mind with one of the engines has the most performance goodies, and you will find of the above engines the 302, 351W has the most stuff.

I think I am going to try and find a 351W or if I decide I don't care about mpgs then I will find a 460. I found a 460 yesterday in the classifieds, has 3000 miles on a rebuild out of a wrecked bronco for $200.

You might want to look at the Trucks they built up a Ford Bronco and installed a 460 in it. I it is a monster. One thing is your Bronco the one that has twin shocks up front? This is the model with is the best one for putting monster engines in.

That is a good price for that 460 if I were you I would go ahead a purchase this engine even if you don't decide to use it right now. If you decide to get this 460, depending on who rebuild this engine, I might consider inspecting, at least it's bottom end to make sure it was assembled properly. How badly wrecked is the other Bronco if you can get it for cheap enough you might make a deal for the whole thing and strip out the good parts off of it before you send it of to the wrecking yard.

If you are doinig research on a project go to the following web sites for the early Bronco.
1.Classicbroncos.com/forum
2.brocofix.com/forum
3.Broncohio.com/forum
These guys are building 351's up all the time and installing EFI. Also there is a build of 427 in tech section of Broncohio.

The one thing about the 460 is out of the box you are looking at big time low end torque with serious 4x4 grunt work low and slow is what will get you where you want to go. The thing about it if you install the 460 and find out you don't like it you can aways change it out for a small block.
With a 460 on the hook I would go with it. There are a bunch of ways to improve the gas mileage in this engine and get more power out of it.
