Default Ford 351 or 400 motors

I have a 1979 f150 and am trying to make it more driveable. I am thinking about putting a fuel injected motor in it and was wondering when ford first started putting fuel injection on these motors. I was also wondering if the fuel injection increased fuel efficency by that much in these motors as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My other option I am consideringf is finding a wrecked 99-2003 powerstroke and swapping the 79 body onto the powerstroke frame. But swapping a gas motor for a gas motor would be alot easier.

Has anyone done a carb to fuel injection swap? I know you have to rerun fuel lines that can be pressurized but what else would you have to do?

Find a donor vehicle so that you can get all of the electricals components. I am pretty sure that they never injected a 351/400M. If it is a windsor, it would have been around 87 (86 for the 5.0 mustangs, don't know about the trucks; my 86 bronco was carbureted).

Sorry, just read your sig. 351M.

i have a 1986 ford it is a EFI they switched from carbed to feul injection about half way threw 1986... I know people who had switched a carberated to feul injection if you have a parts truck with a EFI in it you can switch the centerhead and run your lines and wiring harness for the injectors and also you need a new tank also. not a bad job but it will take some time in getting everything in working order..your best bet I would say is to switch the engines compleatly it would pay off in the end...but its a good idea to switch the 79 to efi i think it would work great!

Yeah I was planning on getting a complete donor truck, that way I can have a 5 speed tranny as well. I was just wondering what year to look for. Thanks guys.

LOL a F/I 460 would get just as good if not better mileage as the 351M. I have a 351M in my '79 bronco. I plan to put in a carb 460, more power and same on fuel.

If your wanting to do F/I, I would find a 351W out of a newer bronco. conversion not easy but more cubes and f/I.

Get rid of that boat anchor 351m. You can get more power easier from a windsor motor. As far as fuel infecting it. You can buy a holley stand alone system, or like the said get a doner truck or car to get the system out f. The Holley system would be easier to wire and install, plus you can keep your stock gauges with it.
