So if there is no engine damage going to result from a loud cam phaser, and the check engine light is not on. Why would I spend the $1500 bucks to get the Phaser replaced????
I would take it to the dealer but they will most likely tell you to have them changed. The ticking noise can mean one of several things; cam phasers, lash adjustors, or or lifters, cam phaser noise itself won't cause engine damage but if the phasers fail then the truck will fail to run. The lash adjusters keep the correct amount of tension on you timing chain. If the lash adjusters, or lifters are bad then you engine will have lower oil pressure which can cause oil starvation in the heads, which causes engine failure. In the picture below the cam phaser is the top circle part that the chain raps around. The lash adjustors are the orange part keeping tension on the chain. In my experience if the cam phasers are bad, the lash adjustors are also bad.
great pic and description sniswend, my truck is in the shop haveing the procedure done, only because its in the shop with a blown tranny, so that was tacked on and my warranty will cover half of the $1970 to replace the phasers and such.

I mean mine sounds so bad that it is very loud and sounds like a diesel engine only at warm idle, ( peole have asked if it is )after 1200 rpm its fine? no sound. So I know its the phasers and the check eng light is not on.
I just want to know if I should spend the money to get them replaced. Is there a updated cam phaser from the stock one that I have now in my 04 5.4
Thanks
I know a guy with a bent rod sounded like what ???

Not sure where you got your terminology from but the orange pieces are not lash adjusters. The top piece that is black and orange is the cam chain tensioner. The black and orange piece below that is the chain guide and the black piece across from that is the other guide.
Lash adjusters are in the head and take the place of the traditional lifters you would see in a push rod motor.
My ticking went away after I out a motorcraft oil filter and 5W-20 synthetic blend oil in my 2006 5.4.
Many aftermarket filters do not have a anti drain back valve. filters made by purolator, including the motorcraft filters do. make sure you stick with them and stay away from a certain orange filter....
So from what i've read, my truck has the diesel sound to it, i've listened to a few videos, and from what i've heard, it seems more like the injectors rather than cam noise. Any input, or have videos that show the difference.
