So if there is no engine damage going to result from a loud cam phaser, and the check engine light is not on. Why would I spend the $1500 bucks to get the Phaser replaced????
I mean mine sounds so bad that it is very loud and sounds like a diesel engine only at warm idle, ( peole have asked if it is )after 1200 rpm its fine? no sound. So I know its the phasers and the check eng light is not on.
I just want to know if I should spend the money to get them replaced. Is there a updated cam phaser from the stock one that I have now in my 04 5.4
Yes there are updated ones and no it will never cause any engine damage. The noise is from the phaser oscilating but the phaser doesnt actually move it just adjust the cam retard or advance. If the noise doesnt bother you let it ride. Personally mine got a little noisy and i replaced mine but I got the phaser for free so go figure.

so accourding to the episode just the cam phaser sprocket needs to be replaced to correct the knocking noise? or can I add a cam limiter to correct the problem?

Thanks
sorry to ressurect an old thread but another reason to have them replaced is the power difference... i drove a friend's 5.4 with good cam phasers and its a huge difference... on the highway mine always has to downshift to get the power it needs but his just has it there and also for around town his seemed way torque-ier to the point where i was getting way more into the gas for the same power benefits (like i'd be at a third to half pedal for his quarter pedal) so i'd recommend doing them... as soon as i can afford it i'm doing mine
I notice mine seems to have a lost some power with the noiser cam phaser. I was also told by a mechanic that if the cam phasers get to loud it will cause problems with the knock sensor. Not sure if that is true.
on average how much does it cost to have the phaysers to be replaced for 03 5.4 mine does not seem to really tick at all and im at 132,000 miles when do u usually start noticing it?
