Default Bad Torque Converter?

Truck: 93 F350 diesel 4 door full bed with 160K on the clock, 2wd unfortunately.

Event: I was going up a mountain pass unloaded, and as I was in the process of passing a slow bus the truck seemed to stay in overdrive/TC lockup and once it geared down to handle the increased grade the engine went from full load to no load and red-lined. Once I coasted to the side of the highway, I crawled under expecting to find a crime scene, but it was clean. There is no forward or reverse, no power to the wheels, period.

Symptoms:
There weren't any loud noises or bangs when I lost power.
When I shut the engine off, I heard a humming sound as something spun to a stop long after the engine stopped turning.
No check engine light
No forward or reverse even in manual low 1 and 2.
Tranny oil pan was clean and oil levels were correct.
When I insert the input shaft into the TC, I can turn it both ways. However, I don't know if this is a sign of a bad TC.
Rear end was quiet
None of the valves in the valve body were stuck.
Forward planetary gearsets were not stripped.
I suspect the TC because I checked the transmission, but i'd like to be sure before I drop $600 on a new TC only to find out it was something stupid.

Fortunately I still have my 96 F150 4.9L for a backup.
