Default 5.4L 3V vs. 2v

Well I have mostly been a older Ford fan but I bought a Screw with the 5.4 3 valve.

My question is when looking up for a air filter for the truck I noticed there were 2 valve and 3 valve 5.4L.

So which is better? Any problems with the 3v? I am still real green with the truck and the new Mod motors.

I did do a search but found nothing that I was really looking for. Thanks in advance, Jason

Racinjason! woohoo a fellow Raptorforumite...welcome to the site man. I think the 2v may be the engine in the older model F-150s. I dont know a lot about the differences but I know the newer 5.4s have spark plug issues...as in they break off in the head! other than that Im not aware of any other real bad issues. But definitely take care when u change the plugs...many will recommend that u just have the dealership do it when it needs them changed.

Thanks buck! Well just got my '05 and the worst part is that it has 82k on it already. So thinking at 100, tranny and plugs and stuff are gonna get changed. Not sure the original owner changed much on the truck. So far I love the truck, great ride, not bad on gas, and quiet. Now to modify it and make it mine.....

still searching for info as I like to know what I drive real well. Stock Hp and Tq #'s ?

300/365.

get a good flow thru muffler'd exhaust system, a CAI, and an SCT tune and it will be a completely different truck.

Not sure about the tune as I dont want to run 91 all the time and worried about causing premature wear on the truck. I dont race it, hell I still have not even floored it yet or spun the tires. I just drive it. Wanna give something hell I just go jump on the quad. LOL As for intake I think it would help the truck breath easier, and well the exhaust just want to maybe do a straight pipe where the muffler was, add a bit of noise and more free flowing. I was also told needed a muffler as the new mod motors like some restriction for performance... ????

you can run 87 octane and will NOT cause premature wear, thats a farce. 82k is nothing for a Ford mod motor. Use a muffler, mod motors perform very well with flow thru mufflers.

This man speaks the truth...

Anyways, I have been told that if u do an intake it is very smart to do a programmer as an intake will make the truck run lean supposedly. Kinda like the rappy hahaha...

I plan on doing an AF1 intake, SCT tuner, and a 3 inch catback exhaust with Magnaflow in the future.

Both are good engines. The 3-valve puts out slightly more power because the engine can breathe better with the 3-valve heads.
Really the only issues I know of with the 3-valve Tritons is that they are known for the sparkplugs stripping or breaking when you remove them. Supposedly Ford wants the engine to be warm when you change the plugs and they want you to use a lot of penetrating lubricant.

Buck I am not sure a intake alone will make it run lean. The computer should detect the air flow and adjust fuel. Thought that was the great part about F/I was that it self tunes to some degree.

Was looking at getting a different exhaust, and intake. Not sure about the tuner as I thought to get the performace you had to run 91. Now your saying you can run the 87??? Like I said I was more the F/I 302 type. Still learning the tried and tested things on the mod motors.

Thanks again!!!

Also done the first "mod" to the truck last night. Smoked the taillights and 3rd brake light. Matches the black paint pretty well.

the new processors and MAF sensors are completely different from the ones in the 2V motor. The sensor is a hyper sensitive fast acting one and is quite prone to maxing out if the fuel tables arent tweaked. Not all intakes will cause this, the AF1 3.5inch will. The spark tables are already maxed on these trucks from the factory and eat 87 octane without a problem. As for fuel use, the old generic chips required fuel because the programs were canned and had the spark table set way up and had the fuel tables cranked way rich. The new software, most notably from SCT changes all of that. The spark table for the most part isnt changed, but the fuel trim is adjusted and works with the knock sensors. The EGR function can be pumped up to increase economy and line pressure at the point of shift can be set low for the first 5-20% throttle and ramped up exponentially up to WOT.

My SCT Xcal3 is being tuned by Justin Starkey at VMP tuning and the three tunes I will get are 87 economy, 87 performance, and 93 performance.

As a side note, the ET posted in my sig on my car is when i ran 87 octane on an economy guinea pig tune my friend cut me when he worked at SCT. The car has a Lightning MAF and 24lb injectors on the fuel side.
