I watched it. Now i feel a whole lot better about what I have been hearing
Im pretty **** when it comes to my vehicles and this noise was one of the first things I noticed and I was kind of concerned. Good to know that the degree of noise I am hearing is normal.
Thanks Whitecrystal

I also have a 04 5.4L and i have noticed the ticking how much did it cost to change the phasers out

I got an estimate from Ford they said it would cost anywhere from 1500 to $2500. I bought my truck from the Lincoln dealer and changed the phasers out for free. They said it cost them $900.

I just bought an 05 F-150 5.4 3V before christmas. During the colder months of Jan/Feb I would hear quite a loud knocking on start up, especially just after I drove off with the engine cold and it came back down to idle at the next stop sign. I am assuming it is related to the cam phaser and/or the chain tensioner. I listened to video 22 metioned earlier and my noise seems to be much more audible than the cam phaser noises. I had it in to one dealer in March. They said it was no big deal, ran some seafoam through it and asked me if they could change my oil because it was dirty. I let them, picked the truck up and there was no change in the noise.
I just took it back to the dealer I bought it from, as there is still warrantee left on it. Gave them the whole history. Turns out they had never changed the fliuds as the salesman had assured me so who knows. I'm curious to find out what they say.

You have piston slap. They are correct it is no big deal. In order to make modern engines as efficient as possible they have lightened the rotating mass of the engine, one of the areas where they have saved a great deal of weight is in the pistons. These pistons have real short skirts. Because of these short skirts the piston will have a short period of slap which goes away very quickly as the piston heats up.
Below are two examples of pistons note the length of the piston skirts. The long part of the skirts always face the direction of the side pressure as the piston moves up and down the bore, all pistons have a certain amount of piston slap, long skirts prevent audible piston slap, short skirts do not.

I have an '05 F-150 Supercrew w/ 5.4. The ticking starts once the engine is warm. You can hear it inside the cab too. I have read that it is the cam phaser and is not uncommon with this year/engine. Have heard it is harmless (just annoying), Is this covered by the factory warranty?

The verdict was that they found nothing wrong and sent me on my way. The noise I was hearing is almost undetectible now that it is warmer in the mornings. I am considering buying an extended warranty for $2100 for 5 years or 50K. It's pro-rated so if you sell the truck you get something back. $200 deductible though. I may have to wait until it's cold again in order to convince the technicians there's something wrong. Warranty runs out in August. Perhaps it is piston slap but it still concerns me. I'm pretty **** about noises as well.

That was the price from the dealer that sold me the truck. It's an extension beyond the original 3yr 36k warranty. It covers electronics as well as mechanical. Without the electronics it's only around $200 less. I figured it would be worth the extra for coverage of all the computer electronics etc. I think the Ford dealer sells these warranties but they are held by a second party. I'm going to look into it further, perhaps discuss it with another dealer. It looks like Ed at partsguy is near me in Bremerton WA. I may just call him and chat. Why do you recommend him? Good honest person?
