5.4 Lifters
I am curious if anyone has tackled just replacing the lifters in an attempt to quiet down these motors? I know that the Phasers are the key contributor to the infamous diesel sound, but I still wonder if I have a little lifter tap also.
It appears that you could replace all the lifters without removing the cam or chain for that matter. I know I have read that the phaser itself will not cause any harm to the motor, but of course I dont want to start floating valves. My diesel noise does not seem to completely go away after the 1200rpm range.
Thanks

FLARESIDE MAN !!!
if you want to tackle it you can loosen the camshaft main caps in reverse order of the torque sequence rraise the cam enough to remove your cam followers (rockers) then you can remove your lifters you should also replace the followers if your changing your lifters. you will then first walk the cam down from the middle cap out both directions first. then torque to spec...all should be good. leave the chain and phazer untouched
good luck
