Hey, thanks for all the responses. I certainly don't think anyone here is a dick for stating their opinion and I do appreciate the advice given. by all I built a full-weight low 11-sec drag car (1999 Trans Am [on motor ... no forced induction]). So, I can do most all the work ... I currently have a 4.2l v6 I'm trading in this afternoon for the 4.6 2-valve. Not looking at creating the kind of cylinder pressures which forced induction introduces, so S/C, TURBO, or NITROUS is not in the cards.

I just want this little 4.6l 281 to have some good low-end grunt out on the road (mostly around town). Not sure how much the 2010 4-speed tranny and rearend will handle at the wheels, but, I'm looking at putting down about 280 to the rear wheels ... it should be plenty safe. Not incredibly fast, but, more than the stock 5.4l. It's a regular cab, so, not too much a weight disadvantage, either. Lessened rotating mass with the 18" aluminum wheel package, though the 2010 brakes are 6% larger. not too much there at either times 4 wheels.

So, I guess it's back to the options I asked to choose from:

Can you guys back up and tell me which option you would chooose if you were to choose one of the three? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for you input and I look forwards to hearing more.

By no means was I being a dick, just stating what I thought would be the best option. I guess I still don't understand the whole situation.

I don't know a whole lot about motors so I can't help you much.

Hopefully someone who knows alot more can help you out. Let us know how it works.

Good Luck.

Didn't take it that way, friend. And I appreciate your kind response.

I did trade trucks yesterday. Traded the '08 4.2l V6 F-150 XL. The new truck is a '10 4.6l F-150 STX. It's a lot nicer and rides much better. I got it 'out-the-door' for $24,891 and they paid my old truck off ... owed $15,144 on it, so, I think I did pretty good on the trade.

I guess I'll just do intake and exhaust. Probably will have it tuned to run a higher octane fuel and just be done with it. That should yield the power I'm looking for without going into the motor and voiding the warranty.

So, I guess it's option #3. Thanks for everyone's input who responded.

You would have so much more time and money invested in doing a head swap on a truck that new that it would be rediculous! And you would have ZERO warranty on a brand new truck!

Either get you a nice, used 5.4 truck or do a tuner, exhaust, CAI and other mods to get the 4.6 close to a 5.4

That's what I was indicating racin4ds. After putting thought process in to it, it's really the only reasonable option. I bought the truck already ... pretty happy with the 4.6l 2-valve ... pulls really hard. Tuner, exhaust, and CAI will put me about where I want to be. The truck is a single cab with aluminum wheels, so, the lighter weight helps it pull better. Ordered 2" levelling spacers this morning.

I would do a set of shorty headers, full cat back exhaust, cold air intake, underdrive pulleys and a chip. Should bump it up to 275 ish hp. Also look into gearing it down to 4.10's. You will be suprised how quick it will feel. My 97 std cab with a 4.6 has all those mods less the headers and the gears are 4.30's with 33" tires. It's really quick until you throw a load into it. Thats the only drawback I guess but who hauls ass with a load lol.

Default Pondering

Well, the JBA shorty's will give it a little more scavenging power down low in the powerband, but, not really enough to justify spending that kind of money on my budget .... JBA's really do look nice, though, for sure.

I'm thinking hi-flo cats with x-pipe and tru duals with single chamber Flowmasters for the exhaust ... along with CAI. My next delimna is to choose between a hand-held tuner, or, take it over to Jake LaMotta's shop and have it tuned to get the most out of the motor. It's so expensive though to get it tuned by a tuner ... over time it costs a lot of money.

I have a 3.55 gear and I plan on taking some road trips. This and the fact it's a new truck, well ... guess the 3.55's will make more sense for me at this time.

I didn't think about underdrive pulleys. Good suggestion. That would get me another 3-4 ponies to the wheels and the alternator/charging system would certainly handle it.

Thanks for your input. I'll definitely consider everything you said.

your 4.6L V8 will most likely already keep up with my 2001 5.4L. the newer small motors have pretty good power from the get go. Congrats on the new truck, not a bad price either.

Have you though about a gear change, say to a 4.10 or something? Unless it's a 4x4, then that could get more expensive. You could gain a little punch from a gear swap though IMHO. Again, congrats.

Thanks JJ ... appreciate your comments. It had been mentioned about a gear swap. A 4.10 gear might be a little too drastic for an automatic transmission, though. 1st gear would only run out to about 22 mph.

Plus, I plan to do a few road trips in the truck and it would push the rpm's up too high to drive long distances at interstate speeds, especially since I plan on a louder exhaust. Else, I'd do a swap.

Thanks again JJ. And I appreciate the congrat's on the truck.
