302 to 400?
I am looking to take the 400 out of my 1978 F250 and put it into the 1986 Bronco.
The F250 is a 2-wheel drive with 4-speed tranny. (1st is the granny gear) Exact trans in unkown because it's been too damn wet to climb under it.
Obviously the Bronco is 4-wheel drive currently equipped with a 302, a C-6 and New Process tranfer case. (Again, It's too damn wet under it and I forget exactly what case it is.)
My main question is, is there a trans that will bolt up to the 400 and fit the spline on the tranfer case or do I need the entire drive train out of an older model Bronco or F-series? I could always change to a 351w but the point is I already have the 400.
Any other suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

I am now under the impression that there are C-6 transmissions with the small block bolt pattern and C-6 transmissions with the big block pattern. Is this correct? And if so, it sounds like that's all I need to do?
And truthfully, am I better off dropping a 351w and calling it done?
Any thoughts?

If you have the coin to spend you can always get a 408 short block... torque torque torque!!!!

Put in the Windsor block. It will drop right in, you can use the existing exhaust manifolds and it will bolt right to the tranny. The Ford 400 was a boat anchor. It is weak and expensive to get power out of.

The only nice thing about the 400 is you can replace it with a 460. In fact on "Trucks" they did a Bronco and installed a 460 V8 in it talk about a stump puller. But the 351W is the way to go. One bit of advice the 351W made in the mid to late 70's with the big 2 barrel carb' had a different head then the 4 barrel version. The difference was in the shape of it's intake ports. The 4 barrel version is the better of the two it has the better intake ports. Edelbrock makes a sweet throttle body FI system that will drop right onto the stock four barrel intake, but you will get even better performance with a matching Edelbrock intake. It uses the stock throttle linkage. The small ECM mounts on the fire wall. The toughest part of the installation in mounting the threaded bung for the O2 sensor. You can set it up with a lap top but that is unnecessary as the ECM is self teaching.

The Windsor is a small block engine and will use the same tranny as a 302. The 351M 400 and 385 series all have the same bell housing the FE blocks 427 428, 390, 360 have a different bell housing than a 385 or small block. The Transfer should have the same spline count on the input shaft so all you will need is the adapter from the tranny to transfer for the type of tranny installed c-6 manual and such.
