My 2011 f150 5.0 has made that ticking noise on off since it was new and now I have 22,000 miles on it and it just makes the ticking sound when first started. Got a guy at dealership to listen to it when new and he crawled almost into engine compartment listening and trying tell where noise was coming from and told me to bring it back and they would check it. It was a few months before I took it back and I was told they didn't hear anything. I didn't buy truck at this small local dealership and if you don't buy there don' expect to get service from any Ford dealership.

Took it back again two weeks ago and with another mechanic he recognized the noise as "not normal". He is doing some research and will get back to me. After reading your experience, I'm going to follow-up on Monday.
Good, make sure you tell them to consider the defective cylinder bore! AND provide you with a satisfactory explanation as to what physically is making the noise. Bottom line, is that it's NOT normal and they will do what they can to push it off as something that is characteristic of the engine...no so!

Not normal, and FORD is OBLIGATED to fix it. You're right, the dealership can be difficult, but you have to be persistent!

Default update on approach to service

It's been a few weeks since the dealerships lead mechanic listened to the engine noise and acknowledged the issue. I now have an appointment for next week and will be leaving my truck with the dealership for a few days. The mechanic has done some research and suspects lifters as the problem. I'm going to take the advice of NIX150 and suggest the oblong cylinder problem. Info appreciated!

Needless to say I'm extremely frustrated...I know there are a few TSB's out there, one relating to the primary timing chain tensioner being loose. However, Ford tells me that my build date is outside of the TSB. I do have to again, ask the question...if the "truck" build date is 2/2012, is it possible that the "engine" build date may fit in the TSB date?? So, the engine may be older than that of the actual build date??

Anyway, any insite you guys have to offer will be helpful.

hey nick can u give me a call i have some questions i would like to ask ya about this problem!!! im havin the same problem if ya dont mind give me a call 304-688-8293 thanks

LOL. Not funny but the way you said it it made me laugh, but you are right. Ford engines run so smooth why do they have to make noise? I rebuilt a 1965 289 HI PO that had been sitting in storage for over 15 years. When I was done I test fired the engine on a floor mount with headers only and it blew flames 15 feet out the back and set a workbench on fire . Point is I put that engine in my 67 Mustang and ran it hard for 3 years and it never, I mean never uttered a single ping/click/pop/tick/whine/valve tick/ or any other sound it shouldn't have. And that was with 1982 technology.
What's up FORD? I love my F150 but the cam phasers are horrible sounding.

So I have a '12 F150 5.0 and this has me paranoid..So a light ticking noise should be normal right? When I had a '11 Camaro it made that same ticking noise and it was considered normal because of direct injection..but the 5.0 coyote doesn't have that.

I mean the ticking is light...I can only hear it with my hood up on the F150. What do ya'll think?
