2012 5.0 Engine Knock...NORMAL?????
#21
I'm glad Ford is replacing your engine, sometimes persistence pays off. It's a damn shame they gave you the run around for so long, but at least you'll have a new engine that should run like a champ!

What the real shame is that you had to take it to 3 different dealers to get it fixed. The first one should of fixed it. Great to hear your getting it fixed and at least you know where to take your truck now to get good service.

They will have to do one of two things:
1) Buy Back - In this case send a Notice of Defect to Ford...if you want I can send you what my Attorney had me send. This basically says fix it or buy it.
2) Complete "long block" engine replacement. This will solve the problem but (to me) create new ones...example: Truck will have a record of major work done on a carfax or similar. Devalues the truck. Explain that to a potential buyer at some point??
After a week of the new motor a hose blew and lost all but a quart of antifreeze...I'd had enough, took it to the dealer I bought it from and traded for a new one that to date, has no issues and I love it! The dealer did work with me on this deal and I ended up in a better loan etc...
Also, if you can, visit the YouTube videos I've posted...and show them to your dealer (email them the link). If you need anymore feedback let me know. The dealer that FINALLY made the diagnosis was Sterling Ford in Sterling VA...the Service Managers name is Joey Stickman - great guy, and he knows the issue.

Mine has made that noise since the day I brought it home. Took it to dealer the second day I had it and the service writer said that he heard the noise. I have owned the truck for 2 months and only have 800 miles on it.
I work 7am- 6pm M-F and cant find the time to drop it off. After reading this I guess I will soon.
I'm sure they will say its not a problem or my favorite, " can not verify customer concern". I dont have the time to go back and forth with the dealership multiple times to get this done.

The thing is, it wouldn't do it all the time..and seemed to be louder at different times. This was during the summer. It seemed to be that the hotter, more humid it was..the louder it was. We could never get it to make the noise on command. But as it was a cylinder problem, it really had no rhyme or reason.
One day, they pulled it in the service area and let it run...then it was loud as hell, and the whole service department went out...then they knew. Talking with the Service manager..he said that FORD was suspect of the cylinder but was not very forthcoming with them. At the end of the day, to test it...they had to get it making noise, then they went through and shut down every cylinder, one by one. When they shut down #4...the noise stopped. So....you might want them to try that.

If your current dealer will not do anything, call Ford, and asked to file a complaint for defective product. They will assign a case number and contact to work with you and a dealer to resolve the problem.
GET EVIDENCE...the videos I made were the smoking gun, that nobody could answer and could say that it was "normal". Also, if you have time, take it to an independent shop to make a diagnosis, and get it on paper. They do not need to fix it, but just have it so that Ford knows that it's been seen and another professional has determined that it is not normal. You will need this if you enter into any litigation or buyback.
Go to a different dealership. Don't tell them what you think is wrong, just that you have this noise. The best thing...is take it into them when it's making the noise and get them to acknowledge it, and get it written down. If they refuse to look at your truck, at the very least get them to write down that they are refusing service - another big thing to have.
Bottom line, get them to hear the noise, and ask them to shut down one cylinder at a time and see if the noise goes away...it has to be making the noise first though... Mine had to be HOT...
The noise comes from the cylinder being bored oblong and the piston/rings etc are sloppy..allowing the knocking noise. It will get progressively worse. There is no TSB on this...
Don't let them bully you. You paid good money for your truck, it should run as designed!

you think they would have tested this stuff. and how is such a large company getting engines that have a cylinder bore that is off of spec. that is flat out embarrasing. bad block.. even worse.

2010 5.4 lt. same noise!!
Glad you posted your problem. I have 37,000 km on my truck and the same "ticking" noise has occurred for the last 6 months since 30,000 km. Dealership mechanic and service manager blew it off. I became frustrated that a vehicle I've looked after since new could make this noise (my last F150 did me well for 16 years). Took it back again two weeks ago and with another mechanic he recognized the noise as "not normal". He is doing some research and will get back to me. After reading your experience, I'm going to follow-up on Monday.
