I had the same knocking noise. I took a video and dropped it off at the dealership and emailed the vid to the service manager. They couldn't replicate the sound but sent it in to Ford and they requested a compression test. The results lead to further inspection. The official diagnosis on the work order was "cylinder distortion". New short block was installed.
I didn't get any flack... I was expecting to get some push back but they even offered a loaner car for the inconvenience. My experience may be unique but there are good dealers out there.
I "think" ford is aware of the issue based on how quickly they agreed to install a warranty short block. I could be wrong but no one even tried to say "it's normal".

It's not normal. I would request a compression test. Evidently this was what lead to the diagnosis that got me a new short block.

Same here but took over a year of fighting with Ford. The dealers hands are tied unless Ford says replace it. I got a long block 30,000km ago and still quiet

Well just to give a update I returned the truck to sheehey ford in Richmond along with the diagnostic report from my local ford dealer . I requested my money back under there 3 day guarantee!! They tried to get me to let them fix it but I wasn't going to except nothing but a brand new crate motor !!! . A day later it was right back on the autotrader for sale .

Hey everyone, new to this forum and glad to see such good information available. Does anyone know if Ford is still working with customers to resolve this issue? I just purchased a 2nd hand '12 f150 35,000mi. and noticed this same problem a week after I began to drive it. I'm super freaked out that it's got this knock/tapping and I just took it in to my dealer and they did the exact same thing, looked at if for two days and then compared it to other trucks and told me it's normal. I'm not buying it and after reading everything on these forums It's clear this is an issue. Is there still a Ford Rep on this forum. I see Brittany has left.

Well, the dreaded engine knock has happened to me as well. I have a 2013 F-150 XLT 4x4 with 46,000 miles. I have not yet taken it to the dealership because I'm military and new to this town, and I just have the feeling when the dealer sees me they will totally blow me off, knowing I'll never buy a truck from them in the future anyway.

I've read through the thread, but does anyone have some good tips on what I should tell them when I go? If they try to play hard ball should I ask them to try looking in the oil or oil filter/compression test/pull the oil pan? If that happens will I foot the bill for the diagnostics, and then have them tell me that nothing is wrong?

Any help would be tremendously appreciated!!

Thanks,

Travis

Default got the knock

Bought a 2012 w 39000 miles. 5.0 four door XLT. At 46000 miles It is burning quite a bit of oil and has the knock. It is worse at times. Dealership acknowledged it was bad and replaced camshafts and lifters on the passenger side of motor. After two weeks got it back today and it is still making the noise, smells strong of hot antifreeze and is smoking on cold start up. It is going back tomorrow. I told them about this page, and the #4 cylinder, they did not want to hear it. To sat the least I am very disappointed in the truck.

This really sucks for Ford. I have a 2012 F150 and it is my FAVOURITE vehicle of all time. I had the knock and the stress of owning a new vehicle with that was terrible. I fought for a year with the dealership AND Ford. I had all but given up when the new service manager pushed Ford to give me a new long block. And she says, they have done 4 or 5 since. Now it is my favourite vehicle again. Don't give up. You have an awesome truck but unfortunately Ford doesn't seem to want to acknowledge there IS a problem with the 5.0. I think a recall would be HUGE so they seem to be fixing only the ones that complain. SQUEAKY WHEEL GETS THE GREASE so you have a fight on you hands. Good luck. Keep us posted!!

I used my iphone and recorded the knock. I sent it to the owner of our local Ford dealership every weekend. Go on Utube there are several with same knock. You need to contact Ford and then start complaining and complaining and complaining. It really sucks we have to do this. I have heard Dodge and Chevy are the same so just be persistant. Good luck!! Hope you win. They replaced mine (after a year of me bitching) with a long block and it runs flawlessly.

My 2011 5.0 engine knocks, the transmission slips,
It really bummed me out when the engine started to knock at 10k miles the dealer did try to fix the knock, put an idle engine pully on it, I thought it was ok but the knock never went away.
I have read, read, read, talked, talked, on the topic, I think it is 3 and 4 pistons are defective.
I am going to try again to get it fixed right .The odds don’t look good. for Ford to fix it right they will have to spend lot of money.
The spider gears were defective less 5k on it they fixed it. But it has always run odd the motor ramps up then go into gear hard sometimes not always. Sometimes it has a slipping gear.

Ford does all the work on it, oil changes etc.…

. I worked my *** off paid off the truck, I keep it shined up the truck sounds like it has 190k on it.
If they will not fix I am going to give Chevy a try again. Dam shame the truck looks great!
