Xcal2 is the way to go. You can have it custom tuned to your truck. Its a plug in program and remove system, so there is no chance of someone playing with your settings or even knowing you have a tune on the truck.

Not really. I have 3 tunes on mine. One is for 87 octane. One is for 93 and one is towing with 93 octane.

5.4 mods
You can see below what I've done to my F150. I'm a fanatic when it comes to tracking mileage. 17 mpg stock, 17 mpg with mods. Throttle response improved a little. The tuner may really help but the tradeoff for high octane makes it a hard decision for me. The truck isn't a powerhouse but it does a great job with my 5500# boat. I sure wish Ford would put a manual tranny in the F150.

Manual tranny
You're right Whitecrystal1, they do offer the manual with the 6 banger. But since the demise of the 300 straight 6 I want no part of them. The 4.0 is awesome in our company Ranger even pulling the boat but I can't imagine the 4.2 working in an F150 well. A supercharger would certainly put a lot of go in my truck but they just aren't for towing. The hotdog in me would still like to try it someday.
