Default Gunk in valve cover of 2005 f150 lariat 5.4L triton

I took my 2005 f150 lariat 5.4L triton in the shop to have the vct solenoids changed and the mechanic removed the valve cover and discovered a lot of gunk. He told me I need to rebuild the engine but I thinks he is just looking to make extra cash. Can I flush this out.

Possibly.. But I dunno with all the vvt stuff and small easy to clog oil tunnels. I just replaced my motor and tranny. Twice on the motor because I tried my luck with a salvaged motor. It ran pretty good . threw some codes replaced sensor and vvt. Ran seafoam changed oil. The motor had the chain phaser replacement. At some point something worked lose and gummed up the timing threw anyways. I bought another motor (well 2 more) new rebuilds had one put in by the dealership. These 5.4s aren't fans of gunky oil. So if you wanna flush it out i suggest a gasket rebuild so you can flush it properly (you want everything out of it). Loosened gunk turned out to be my killer. Once you pull these motors apart your looking at 11 hours to pull it out and start the taking apart process. A rebuild will likely cost near 2k .. I would sell you my spare new still in crate motor for that.
