5.4 engine knock on start-up
Replaced all front engine parts and vts's engine ran fine for 4 months no ticking or knocking cam phaser sounds. On my way home stopped at buddies place for half an hour when I started the truck to leave engine made a rattling sound now when ever the truck sits longer than 15 minutes it has a rattle on start-up the longer it sits the louder and longer the rattle on start-up. Could the oil pump be leaking back to the oil pan?

The most usual 2 things that cause it are timing chain tensioner gaskets leaking (I would doubt that's it though if you changed all of your timing components), or the hydraulic lash adjusters leaking down and cause lifter tick on startup. My '07 has done this ever since I've owned it. In my case, mine is the lash adjusters leaking down.

thanks guys, I have even changed the tensioners since replacing everything didn't help I will have to look into the lash adjusters. No I didn't check the pick up but truck didn't make a sound until 4 months after replacing everything and only rattles for a couple seconds at start up. Some day you can barely hear it and other days it is bad

That pickup screen begins to plug and you have no way of knowing how much.
Just a little blockage and the oil quantity and pressure decreases.
As the gauge on the dash is just another idiot light that represents 0 pressure or approximately 7psi at mid gauge, you dont know what you have.

This is very important for these engines.
