Default 5.4 3v VCT question...

i recently did a complete overhaul on my 5.4 3v in my navigator. I broke a timing chain guide and the tensioner was giving me some chain slap at startup. The list includes:

cam phasers
timing chain tensioners
timing chain guides
timing chains
VCT solenoids
head gaskets
new head bolts
new exhaust manifold gaskets
cam position sensors
crank position sensor
crank sprocket
crank trigger wheel
new belt
new thermostat
new crossover neck gaskets
new timing cover gaskets
new balancer gasket
new 5w20 oil
new bosch filter

i was STILL getting some shaking at idle. i stepped up to 10w30 (a LONG thread was read with everyone opinions at that this point i had no choice but to try it) and all noise went away and it runs great now.

My question is what keeps pressure when the motor is off? It seems like my passenger side has a terrible noise at startup, almost like the phaser is completely dry. Its only for about 2 seconds. I'm at my wits and wallets end at this point. My only last option is replacing the oil pump thinking theres a check valve or something damaged or dirty. Which perhaps could also be contributing to my low oil pressure/VCT noise at idle.

Not an expert on filers but Use a motorcraft oil filter - read some wear how other cheap filters could give problem ( back flow valve deteriorating and pieces getting stuck in oil guide leading to cam phasers )

Hey ka0tyk,
I'm looking at tackling the same job, except replacing the oil pump as well (Melling 10340). Hoping I can get it done like you did. From what I've heard (and from Mellings website), the original oil pump has an aluminum backing plate that causes something like 20% of the oil to flow right back into the pan instead of getting up to the cam phaser. I'm by no means a great mechanic here and I'm learning as I go. Here is the post I'm working on to help guys like us out once and for all.

As far as the oil filter(from the best engines post), does the Motorcraft filter have something that a Bosch wouldn't? I have always used Bosch oil filters and thought they were a pretty darned good, however, I wouldn't really know for sure because I've never sawed one in half and compared it to the Motorcraft one. Can an expert put this one to rest for us once and for all?

i think your free and clear and your only real "problem" is the oil is really thick so it just runs down to the pan when the truck isn't in use.
