Default Timing

Im trying to tune up my truck and someone removed the timing label. What am I supposed to set it to for a 93 5.0 with electronic advanced timing?

You've not provided much info about the vehicle/motor (always hard to diagnose from a computer forum...).

Is this a new problem since setting timing? engine work? always run poorly?

Is the pop in the exhaust or intake?

Does "sometimes" mean irregular pattern on a fairly constant basis or once on Monday and not again until Thursday?

Irregular basis like once every week or two andnits definitely through the exhaust. Its been happening since i recently got the truck, not as often since the timing.

Well JD, I've not had to chase that demon yet (intermittent exhaust popping...)

So you're at the limits of my experience - exhaust popping is going to imply its running rich or exhaust valve (timing/not seating/etc...).

Some will tell you to try a compression test to check your valves (which it will do that), I've become partial to doing a Leak-down test as it gives me more information about the internals of each cylinder. (plenty of online directions & how-to's)

I wouldn't put this past an injector acting up.

Could the sound be engine knocking? (try different (octane) gas) - looking at the plugs is a good idea.

JD, didn't think of it earlier, but are you disconnecting the SPOUT connector when setting the timing?

Yes I did because of the electronic advance
