Default First oil change

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere but haven't found it yet.

I just hit 1000 miles on my 2013 XLT super crew with the 5.0. When I bought the truck dealer said first oil change at 5k but people have suggested that I get it sooner. So far I've heard 500, 1000, and 1500. I'm not doing any 'hard' driving but I do tow my 16.5' ski/fish boat up to the lake on the weekends. Should I go ahead and change the the oil or hold off until maybe 3k.

When I do change it should I go to the dealer or do it myself. Would this affect warranty? I figure if I do change it ill use motorcraft oil and filter as recommended by manual.

I would appreciate any advice.

There are a lot of threads on this subject and you will get every answer under the sun.

Personally, I follow the owners manual which says to use the IOLM built in the truck.

Yeah I figured. I talked to the service department at the dealer today and they said to change at 5k. He clarified they no longer use "break in" oil and there is no reason to think there would be debris that would warrant an early change. I suppose if there was any debris that's what the filter is for... I'm waiting until 5k.

My 5.0 shows oil life and when you should change. I have 6k on the truck and the monitor still shows 40% oil life, so it looks like a 10K oil change to me-

I change when it says 40-50% life which is around 6k.

No problem with that at all.

I do all mine at !,000 miles or less. Its not that the oil wears out, but I don't like all the manufacturing metal chips in the oil filter any longer than necessary. On my new '13 5.0L Platinum I plan to change it at 500 miles. I change my own oil, actually my 18 year old son does w/my supervision so it really is little cost to me. I would never go 10,000 miles on a new engine. If the filter were to have a break through the engine could be harmed. On my 13 C-Max we changed the oil at 1,000 miles and the next change at 10,000 miles which was at 8 months of service.

I changed mine out at 1k miles because it had a strong fuel smell and you could see the dilution of the oil on a towel. The new engine was running quite rich until the ECU trimmed the fuel.

I'm a fan of early change on a new vehicle. Sealants used in assembly contain silicon. There may be metallic remnants left over from the machining process, or other contaminants. Even though the oil and filter might be fine, IMO changing early insures that these things are removed, rather than circulated.
