Been doing a little reading online, some people are using one grade higher than recommended in their vehicles(across many manufacturers), and some owners' manuals recommend 5 a 30 weight rather than a 20 weight (for example) in heavy duty, mountainous, or high heat situations.

Anyone using a 30 weight oil in their 5.0? If so, did you notice any change in mpg or any other changes?

i only use Pennzoil 5w30 full synthetic it makes vehicles last longer at least it worked for me. i have a 91 f150 with 350,000 miles on it and it still runs great . having problems with fuel but nothing with the engine. i recommend sticking with 5w30

Thanks...it seems folks are more interested in mods on the OUTside than what's going on Inside the engine. I'm planning to use 0w30 (northern MT will have some -35 starts)...thanks again for the input.

As always, I would stick with the manufacturer's recommendations. The 5.0 is not a 5.4.

I run 5w-30 amsoil in my 2013 5.0. Having torn into couple dozen of these 5.0 engines, IMO 20 weight is just to thin for these engines if you tow, haul anything or treat it in any other manner from an old lady.

Just my opinion, but with the recent oil change I have noticed about 1 mpg gain average over the last 800 miles...

Mobil 1 5w30 oil only in the cars and trucks at my place.
Wait until you see it on sale some place and go buy it in bulk.
The 4.4 liter jugs were on sale for half price not long ago, so i bought 16. Store them and all the filters for various vehicles on shelves inside the shop, so always ready.

5W20 Motorcraft Syn Blend & Motorcraft Filter ONLY!

Why? Because that's what Ford says to run in it and I have actually pulled apart a motor (2003 5.4L) @ 100K that only had the about oil and filter and it looked BRAND NEW! The cylinder walls still had honing marks! So why would I change?

How were the bearings in the engine you pulled apart?

I never removed the cams from the heads or the crank out of the block. The motor was pulled apart due to pushing the even living crap out the n/a block at 12# and ended up getting detonation at the drag strip and melted a hole in #2 piston.


As you can see in the background the heads were CLEAN!
