5 L engine knocking

I finally took a video of mine. Late model 2011 (9/2011 build date) with 25,000 miles that knocks as the engine is warming up. It's quiet at cold start and it pretty much disappears when the engine is at operating temp. But this is what it sounds like idling while it's warming up. I think the cold temps we are having makes it more pronounced. As stated in numerous threads, it's loudest on the passenger side. The truck runs great and hardly uses any oil. My drive train warranty is up 10/2016...not sure what to do honestly.

If it goes away when it's warmed up, it's not likely to be bearings. If it's just a while it's cold thing, it'll most likely be piston slap (piston hitting the side of the cylinder) - that generally goes away as the motor warms up and the piston expands.
If you have a drivetrain warranty, take it in and get it fixed. It won't get better by itself, but it probably will get worse.
Google "piston slap" - should give you more info

Is piston slap common on these new 5.0 engines? I did not believe it was. Other members have reported an oblong #4 cylinder in a bad batch of blocks. If this truly is piston slap, I can most likely live with it. The risk of having a new shortblock installed may not be worth it in my opinion.
I could always take it in to get my concern documented and see what Ford has to say I suppose.

Engine Oil Engine Knock
Apart from miss fitting pistons and crankshaft end play issues...Use ONLY full Synthetic 5W-30 oil in these 5.0 V8 motors. I use Mobil 1...But Castrol is also good. Change every 7500 miles. You gotta keep all those internal chains well lubed. The factory recommends 5W-20 but that is because it gets very slightly better gas mileage with the thinner oil. Better to keep the engine well protected, the new 5.0 V8 has an oil cooler, it is there for reason, heat dissipation, the 5W-30 oil protects the internals better.
My 2012 Ford F150 with only 17,000 km on it, has engine knocking. I Took it to the dealer today and they said the number three cylinder is where the noise is coming from. They said they have to wait too hear back from ford Canada before they can do anything. Has anyone else had this problem with such low mileage?I'm wondering what kind of engine work this might entail?????

2014 Engine Failure
I have brand new 2014 truck with 2700 miles on it. The engine is the 5.0 model.
Noticed the engine seemed to be losing power, i.e. took more throttle input to get the truck to respond.
Headed to work one morning, check engine light came on, engine coughed and shut down.
Had vehicle towed to Ford dealer.
Inspection of the engine showed a major failure on the right bank head. Cam bearings wiped and secondary timing chain snapped.
Waiting on a new crate motor now.
Mechanic told me that he is seeing a lot of head failures, mainly pushrod guides worn out. He seems to think it poor quality in the manufacturing process associated with the heads.

I have a 2012 with same issue. I will try another dealership I guess. So annoying that I have to search for a fix myself. This is my 3rd F150 and never had a issue with any of the others but they also didn't have a 5.0 L

5.0L engine TICK
I just bought my 2014 left over FX4 with the 5.0L and I have only had it less than a week with only 600 miles on it and it's ticking. I thought I had moved away from engine problems when I traded my 07 with the 5.4... WTF???? How can an engine with only 600 miles on it go bad? I am bringing it in today to find out what is what with this "TICK. fustrated
This is a little video of my Ticking sound.

Hi
You are not alone my friend. Check out this thread on here https://www.f150forum.com/f38/5-0-en...6/#post4297760
I believe what you have is just noisy injectors. Mine has same thing. They won't fix it. I did however get a new long block due to a knocking. The first week or so it was very quiet but the ticking isd back as loud as ever. No knock tho!!

rlorion, yours sounds like fuel injectors ticking, which is normal. Can you give us an update? Just a tip, change the oil early while the engine is young, like 1k-2k miles, and 3k miles after that. There is a lot of excess fuel until the ECM adjusts, which winds up in the oil and reduces the protection of the already thin 20 weight oil.
