Heads and cam, but, that's awfully expensive. I was so frustrated with my 2008 F-150 4.2l, I traded trucks. The regular cab I had was a base XL model and weighed nearly 5000 lbs. The weight of the vehicel didn't make it worth spending a lot of money on it. If you just want a 'little more power', you can do just CAI and a good catback.

yes for the 2000 model you can buy a cheap cold air intake off ebay for like 60 bucks.... and it works great.... i have a 2002 and its got the ebay CAI kit on it and its great....
and i also had a custom catback installed by a local muffler shop....
A good tune up will help performance .... get some MAF cleaner made by CRC and clean the mass air flow(MAF sensor) this will help also
you could also do a programmer

Yeah, everyone who owns a vehicle with a MAF should clean the sensor wire with Isopropyl alcohol al least once a year. There's no need to buy cleaner unless it does something for you mentally and makes you feel better. Nothing works better than Q-Tips and regular old rubbing alcohol. All the MAF wire does is detect the temperature of the air intake, so, don't expect any noticeable difference there. it is good to keep it clean.

There's several things to help a little. The electric fan conversion frees up some HP. Underdrive pullys. Then headers and a new exhaust will help. One thing about the 97-03's they weighed a little less then the 04-08's. The 4.2 was honestly too small for that bodystyle IMO.
Headers, Fans, and a CAI should run you under a $1000.
Here's a link to the headers, these are $579. I'm sure you can find some a little cheaper.

Hey just found out my camshaft gears are bad, that's why I was not getting any oil pressure. So I'm faced with two options new motor or replace parts if I'm going to replace parts might as well get a better cam right? So who makes cams and heads for our 4.2l?
