I have a 2002 f150 with the 4.2L with 88k on the motor. I recently switched to mobile 1 synthetic 10w30. Now after 2000 miles with the new oil I am noticing a ticking noise in the morning that lasts for about 1 min. Is this something that I should be concerned about? What is causing this? Should I do an engine flush and go with a 10w40?
The engine calls for 5W20. Have been informed by the Ford techs any other oil weight causes premature valve train wear. I just did my 42nd oil change this AM. Motorcraft 5W20 synthetic from Wall Mart. Oh and by the way, 42 oil changes on this engine equals 210K miles, purrs like its new. Have to go now and get batteries for my hearing aid.
also... i would pick an engine oil and stick with it... i would stay with 5w30 or 5w20... but i would stay with the same brand...exspecially if you plan on keeping it for awhile
When it's time to add oil, put in a quart of Rislone. It can be found in most auto parts stores near the motor oil section. It comes in a yellow quart can. It's purpose is to quiet noisy lifters. For ten years, I used it in a GM 350 every time the engine started ticking at start up. Like yours, my engine would tick, rather loudly, at startup. After about 1 -2 miinutes it would quieten down, but it annoyed me. The Rislone always worked like a charm.
Caution: I do not know if Rislone is compatible with synthetic oil. Before using it, make sure it is compatible. If unable to find out, do not use it, just to be safe. You may have to do a little internet research to find answers.
My 2003, 4.2 has a light ticking even when warmed up...Gonna try using a engine treatment..what have you guys used with success? I have 108,000 on my truck and always used 5w-20 since i bought it with 98K

Had intake manafold gaskets replaced. I can feel an improvement in a bit better responsiveness and mpg is improved. I can monitor my engine stats through my android app "Torque". Will share after I get through this tank of gas.
Diagnosed my ticking to a leaking intake manifold gasket. Engine has 109,000 on it
intake manifold gaskets replaced but ticking is still there at all temperatures. It does change in speed along with engine rpm. Not crazy loud I can hear it with radio off at stop lights and stuff
