P0016 Eco Timing Chain?
#111
Computer tells the chain slack
I brought my 3.5 in to the local ford dealer, and they said they could tell about camshaft chain slack from the computer read out. Mine was fine (@67000 miles), but a couple of plugs were failing and giving me a 50rpm tick every 3 or 4 seconds at idle. So not all chains fail at an early age. Don't know why, but changing oil Mobil 1 extended advanced full synthetic about every 6000 miles. . . about 30% on my oil readout on the truck computer. . .Lucky I guess.

Not lucky just taking care of.

Thanks
I just want to say thanks to everyone posting here. I've been following this thread for a few weeks now. My 2012 F150 eco-boost with 66000kms had the timing chain changed out a couple weeks ago after a couple service visits. It was quiet for a bit but now the rattle is back and the CEL is on this morning. P0012
Taking it in tomorrow to a different dealership because I have had nothing but problems, poor workmanship and excuses from the first one. They didn't get the crank pulley put on all the way and it blew the serpentine belt 2 hours after I got it.
I've learnt lots here and will have some knowledge to help me out. I'll post when I find out what the problem is.
Thanks again.

And so fast forward three years (reviving old thread) (not starting a new one) where are we at with this?
Had mine done under warranty less than 2 years ago - now get the P0016 code along with a P0299 code...
Truck has very low power...and I'm sure this is gonna cost me a bundle!
I hear ford is extending warranties on some ecoboosts but not the F150s for this?
So...do I have to budget to replace the timing chain and turbos every 2 years?

my my suggestion is to trade it in. These gen 1’s are lemons.

Theres two types of ecoboosts (3.5) the broken ones and the ones that are going to break!
Whats changed with these timing chains in the next generation and when did that change happen?
Trade it in...on a Ram maybe! Fckn tired of this crap.

Funny what a person discovers when this happens to them...
Did some digging around today - seems theres much to be said about changing the oil...much more often than Ford recommends.
The oil change intervals which Ford has set at 7000km or 4500 miles is in many an expert mechanics opinion way too long to go between oil changes for these engines.
Once I get this truck fixed I'll be cutting that in half - I started with the first oil change at 2500 km and the service tech asked why I was there. Ive never exceeded the recommended mileage but now that I've spoken to a few folks the oil life is drastically reduced due to the turbos and the possibility of fuel in the oil which all have a huge impact on viscosity and oil performance.
I think more emphasis should be placed on more frequent oil changes.

Incredible thread! I read the first 100 or so posts and gleaned a heap of info. Our 2014 Explorer Sport (3.5L ecoboost) just popped the P0016 so I'm assuming this means the timing chains need to be done. I see reports of this taking about 15hrs worth of DIY time but can anybody rate the overall difficulty? For example, I have done cams and intake manifold on 4.6L Mustangs, installed differentials in 9.75in rears and of course all types of general repairs and maintenance. Scale of 1-10 for difficulty where 1 would be a air filter change and 10 a complete engine tear down, what would this job be?
I wish this would have surfaced BEFORE it got cold...
