Default How good is the EcoBoost engine?

I'm getting ready to replace my 98 F250 LD. The EcoBoost is attractive to me. The higher gas mileage with the increased power. Naturally aspired engines will lose 3% of it's power for every 1000' of elevation. Forced induction retains most of the power even at altitude. Since I live at 6000' and often visit 10,000' - 12,000', having power is needed.

How good is the EcoBoost engine?

I'm also looking at the V8.
Along with what Chevy and Ram have.

Opinions?

Bought my 2013 fx4 EB in March and haven't looked back. I can't comment on towing with it as I don't do that with mine. It is my daily driver. Gas mileage for me has been ok. Nothing crazy good or bad like you will read in some other posts. The truck has been trouble free (almost) for me. I had to have the tires re-balanced at 9000 km to fix a bad vibration in the cab. I have not experienced the CAC issues like some other 2013 and earlier owners.
Do some reading on here. I think you will find the gas savings between the EB and the 5.0 are negligible. That is not really worth the extra cost of the EB engine.
If you want the power and torque.....that is the reason to pay for that engine!!
I know people have had engine trouble with their 2013 EBs, but from my experience I would not hesitate to recommend it to someone. Good luck with your purchase.

Owned a 2011 Eco and traded it on a 2013 Eco. No problems with either one. Very Happy!

I have about two years and 55,000 miles on my 2011 EcoBoost and I'm generally happy with it.

PROS: My overall mileage is 18.2, which is about dead center in the EPA rating for my configuration, but not that different than the 5.0. It has all the power I've needed - it has pulled a bed full of dirt and rocks as if it was empty. I've easily exceeded its weight rating (for short distances on back roads) with no problems. It accelerates really fast (but see below). It has been mechanically sound so far.

CONS: It has significant throttle lag, which I have not gotten used to. I driven turbocharged vehicles before, but this lag is ridiculous. It's especially annoying when I need to accelerate quickly in traffic: stomp on the gas and nothing for 1/2 sec, then it goes (like a bat out of hell). I've learned how to anticipate it, but sometimes you need the power unexpectedly and it isn't there for a second. That has been scary.

The horrible throttle response is my biggest complaint and I may eventually get a tune to fix it. Because of this, and this alone, I would not get another EcoBoost engine. If they could fix this, I would get another.

I don't notice the lag so much but my driving style is probably different. It is really responsive as a daily driver and pulls my 6k toy hauler without any strain. Two thumbs up from me so far.

Eco likey altitude! I get much better mpg above 5,000 feet than I do below! Power is a non-issue, and as far as I am concerned, I do not see how Ford could improve the tow/haul!

At 10,000+ feet, the Ecoboost will walk away from every other stock engine that is not a diesel.

2011 30k no problems pulls like a freight train at 7000ft [flagstaff AZ] as for turbo lag its non existant just learn to roll into the throttle don't stomp it.

2012 EB FX4 with 13K. Love it. Never had any engine problems. I've only towed a small trailer once with it so far so I don't have any advice on towing. I have driven both the 5.0 and 3.5 before making a decision when i bought mine, was very skeptical about buying a full size V6 truck opening the hood asking where the engine was but was sold on the EB after one test drive. Plenty of power and average fuel economy for a full size truck and the fit, finish and quality of an FX4 model surpasses Silverado and Ram in my opinion. I've never been a Dodge person and gave up on new Chevy's years ago.
Good luck.
