Unhappy 3.5L Turbo "cycling" and check engine light

I'm reposting this on this forum. Last night I posted it on the 2009-2014 F150 Forum, not realizing this one is here. My apologies to anyone who reads it twice...

I've got a 2011 F150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost. Just over 67,000 miles on it and up to this point I love this truck. Now comes the heart ache...

I starting noticing that on long easy acceleration the turbocharges would "cycle". This was strictly by feel and sound as it is not equipped with a boost gauge, but he turbos would start to build pressure, waste it off, and repeat.

A short time later the check engine light came on.

Dealer spent 1.5 days testing and they are to the point that Ford has told them the next step is to pull the timing chain cover and check for slack. Quoted price of $1300 (with new parts) and no guarantee this will fix the problem. Error codes P016, P017, P018 and P019.

Called Ford Customer Care, that was like blowing into the wind...

Anyone with an experience like this? I'd hate to drop $1300 and not have it fixed. Really P.O.'d with Ford on how free they are with my money...

I didn't realize there was an Ecoboost forum either. When it's "cycling" does it sound like this: https://www.f150forum.com/f38/ecoboo...r-load-298090/

Nope. Not the same (don't know if that is good or bad...).

No grinding in mine. You can here the turbos build pressure, then waste it off, build pressure, waste it off and repeat for as long as I am accelerating or until I reach 3,000rpm. You can also see the tach bounce in sync with the turbo.

May sound dumb, but when was the last time you changed your plugs? If over 50,000km from the last time you may want to just change them. I'd also look for boost leaks, you will see an oil film where the hose clamps are or I'd just tighten them all for good measure. Some are easier to get at then others. May not solve all your problems but an easy place to start. Mine was doing something similar but not so bad as to throw a code, it would just dump boost while under low-med acceleration.

Angry

After 2 weeks at my dealer (1 week thanks to Ford's inability to ship the timing chain...) I have my truck back. Bittersweet afternoon. Truck runs great, throttle response has improved, MPG's are up, no turbo cycling.

Bad news, I wish $1300 covered the bill.
