Default Steering gearbox replacement

Hi everyone, I just bought a 1995 2wd 4.9. I am in the process of replacing tie rods, ball joints and steering box. I can't get the connecting link to slide onto the new box. I spread open the link as far as possible without removing the shaft. Is there anything else that I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There is probably a slotted or "flat" spot. Basically it should line up a certain way, not just slide on in any position. I think. I'd have to look at one at the shop to be sure. Inspect your shaft on the gearbox really close and see if there isn't maybe a spot that has to line up with the collar going over it.
