Just replaced most of the steering on my 95 XLT. The steering was loose before and is still has play even with a new and adjusted steering gear. What else can be the cause? I'm thinking either the intermediate shaft or the universal joint.

I have a 95 XLT and steering is a little loose also, but been that way since I got it with 42k original miles, so I am thinking it could just be the way they are. My entire front end was inspected and all was good. I notice it more, when tire pressure is too high, 30 psi seems about right. My tires are more mud/snow tires than freeway type, so could add to the feel some.

Figured it out. Went to get an alignment and it turns out the driver ball joints started to go.

I have an 87 xlt lariat and i can the steering wheel about 10 degrees left and right without the truck moving. Im guessing i have to do what you did to fix it

Have someone turn the steering wheel hard lock to lock while looking at tie rods, links etc. Should be no play between parts.
