I think it could be a partially blocked heater core. Try disconnecting the heater core inside the engine compartment and make a loop deleting the heater core. Of course you will have no heat but can see if your temperature stays constant on your gauge to see if that is the problem. I just changed mine 2 mo ago and there not hard at all to change and cost about 26 bucs
