Default What is you MPG on an early 80s F150 Inline 6

I'm looking to buy an early 80s model F150 with a 4.9L inline 6. I have just heard different opinions on the fuel efficiency between the carburated and the fuel injected. Which in your opinion is better. I know with the carb I'll get more power which I like.

I have an 85 in mind that I really want to buy, but I want to keep the fuel consumption affordable, atleast in the high teens, since it will be my primary means of transportation.

Let me know. Thanks

You won't get more power with carbureted. A carbureted engine can run well at certain RPM's, but doesn't have enough control to give the perfect air/fuel ratio over all RPM's. Fuel injected has more precise control over the air/fuel ratio, resulting in a better running engine and better fuel economy. You also have the bonus of the On Board Diagnostics with fuel injected, which helps you find engine related problems.

I had an 82 F150 with the 6 cyl and a 3sp auto trans with a carburator. It got 15 MPG pretty much every where.
